I start by browsing my collection of props, setting up a scene, and looking through my viewfinder. Sometimes a trip to the thrift store is required to boost my inspiration!
Once I'm happy with the composition it's time to sketch. For this I use a variety of media: oil sticks, pastel pencils, and oil paint are some of the most common.
After the sketch it's time to mix paint. I keep my value scale handy and start by asking, "What's the lightest part of this painting? What's the darkest? What drew me to this scene?"
Then it's time for paint to hit the canvas. I normally paint solvent-free and all in one session, alla prima style.
Sometimes the values look wrong at first against the white canvas, but once the the colours are put in context they really sing.
Finished! 1-2 months after completion the piece is normally ready for varnish and a trip to its new home.
